Every April 15th, we celebrate Transplant Nurses everywhere, recognising their hard work, dedication and care.
Transplant medicine is a long and difficult journey at times for the patient and their family, but transplant nurses are there to smooth the road along the way. Transplant can have unexpected turns and corners at any time but the care team are always there to help and advise.
When I think about my own transplant journey, the nurses I met on the way had such a big impact on my ability to negotiate even the hardest of days. Their understanding and optimism, their wisdom and knowledge, they all played a part in ensuring that I never felt that I was facing the insurmountable alone.
Transplant is not just about a physical operation. The mental aspect of the journey plays a vital role in patient care. Sometimes it can be a simple as spending five minutes chatting with a patient as they wait for their chance to live as often, patients are stuck in hospital away from family and loved ones.
So this day, we honour and thank all of those dedicated nurses who give so much of themselves in these roles.
