Organ & Tissue Donation: What You Need To Know
Every day, people across the UK are waiting for a life-saving transplant. One donor can save up to 9 lives through organ donation, and help many more with tissue donation.

What You Can Donate
- Organs: heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, pancreas, small bowel.
- Tissues: corneas (to restore sight), skin (for burns patients), bone, tendons, heart valves, and more.
Your Choice Matters
- You can choose to donate some or all organs and tissues.
- You can appoint someone you trust to make decisions for you.
- Talking to your family or friends means they’ll know your wishes when it matters most.
How Donation Works in the UK
- In England, Wales, and Scotland, the law presumes you agree to donate unless you’ve opted out — but families are always consulted.
- Some groups are excluded, such as those under 18, recent visitors to the UK, and people without the capacity to decide.
No “Too Old” or “Too Ill”
- There is no upper age limit for donating.
- Even with health conditions, you may still be able to donate certain organs or tissues — specialists will decide at the time.
Your Privacy
- Your decision is recorded securely and only seen by authorised NHS staff.
- Specialist nurses will support your loved ones and ensure your beliefs are respected.
- Your family will always be consulted so it’s very important you Share Your Wishes with loved ones.

Why It’s Urgent
Someone dies every day because there aren’t enough donors.
Around 8,000 people in the UK are waiting for a transplant.
Those 2 minutes could go on to give the gift of life.
